Swine Flu (H1N1): What you need to know

Mason General Hospital and clinics are working closely with local and state health officials to provide you with up to date, accurate Swine Flu (H1N1) information. You can be assured that our staff is prepared and on alert.

What is swine flu?

  • Influenza A viruses causes illness in humans and many animals.
  • Some influenza A viruses are adapted to pigs and cause respiratory illness in them, and so have been called “swine flu” or H1N1.
  • Human symptoms are similar to the symptoms of regular human influenza that happens every year. Those include fever, cough and sore throat. In addition, fatigue, lack of appetite, runny nose, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea have been reported.
  • The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has determined that the swine flu virus causing mild illness in some states is the same strain as the virus causing an outbreak of respiratory illness among humans in some areas of Mexico.

Individuals are advised to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water on a regular basis and should seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms of influenza-like illness.

Pandemic Outbreak or Avian Flu:

Avian influenza is an infection caused by avian (bird) influenza (flu) viruses. These influenza viruses occur naturally among birds. Wild birds worldwide carry the viruses in their intestines, but usually donot get sick from them. However, avian influenza is very contagious among birds and can make some domesticated birds, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, very sick and kill them.

Usually, “avian influenza virus” refers to influenza A viruses found chiefly in birds, but infections with these viruses can occur in humans.
