State Reviews MGH “Exceptional”
Last summer MGH went through three days of intense review by the Washington State Department of Health, and according to Bob Appel, CEO of MGH, “This was probably the most thorough review that we have gone through in my 16 years at the hospital.  It is gratifying to see this acknowledgment (by the State) for the hard work that everyone contributes here.  Overall, they were very complimentary, calling the hospital exceptional. They said that they will take several of the things that we are doing here as models for other hospitals they survey (to use).”

Karen Hilburn Fund Donates $5,000 to Oakland
Bay Pediatric Clinic
for Cancer Prevention

The Karen Hilburn Breast and Cervical Cancer Fund, an  affiliate of Mason General Hospital Foundation, recently donated $5,000 to Oakland Bay Pediatrics, Shelton, to help pay the costs associated with the “Gardasil” vaccine that helps prevent certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV).  Gardasil is designed to prevent infection with HPV that currently causes nearly all cases of cervical cancer.  Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer in women world-wide, and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in the majority of developing countries.

“This is a wonderful and much needed grant to help cover the costs of administering the three-step vaccination to female patients,” said Terry Megiveron, director of clinic operations for Public Hospital District No. 1 – the governing body that manages Oakland Bay Pediatrics.

The three injections are given over a six month period to women from 9 to 26 years of age. To inquire about the Gardasil vaccine, call Oakland Bay Pediatrics at (360) 426-3102.
